Planning Careers

High quality training, strong undergraduate practical experience or post graduate practical experience and a respected University of Liverpool qualification help to give our graduates the edge when it comes to getting a job.

Our strong connections with practice and client focused group project work are features of all our degree programmes, and we make sure our courses provide the knowledge and skills that employers are looking for and constantly updating our teaching to be at the cutting edge of practice.

By graduation, our students have developed a keen understanding of the way in which places work, and how planning and management activities can promote more sustainable patterns of development. With skills that include research and data analysis, GIS, urban design, plan making, team work, project management and written, verbal and visual presentation our graduates embark upon a surprisingly wide range of careers both in the UK and overseas.

Many go into core areas of town and regional planning in the public sector and private consultancies, or, with development companies including house builders, infrastructure providers, or retail chains with large property portfolios. Others become engaged in urban regeneration and economic development or lead environmental management programmes for major companies. Some are attracted to work in environmental charities such as the Wildlife Trusts, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or Council for the Protection of Rural England. In addition, exiting new opportunities are opening up in the emerging field of marine spatial planning.

Each year we also welcome a range of PhD research students including some that have graduated from our taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Such students are often keen to pursue research or academic careers in planning and related disciplines, and we have an international network of PhD graduates working in universities accross the world.

A number of our programmes are accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute and following two years of professional practice offer access to professional membership of the RTPI.
