Student Profile: Liam Mclaughlin

Why did you choose to study English at the University of Liverpool?

I have always loved reading and the process behind it. English was always my favourite subject at school so it felt like an obvious choice for further study.

What do you enjoy most about the course, and why?

I like the variation of subjects and how the course covers different eras. It has exposed me to a lot of great authors and works I wouldn’t have found otherwise.

Can you tell us about an exciting project you have completed on your course?

I had to create a creative piece to be assessed on for my Modernism module in second year. I got to take the project in my own direction and deliver it how I wanted, which felt unique.

What does Liverpool have to offer as a city?

A lot of great places to drink, a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and a wealth of opportunity.

Can you tell us about the teaching methods/how your learning has been facilitated?

I appreciate the personal interaction my tutors have engaged with me in and how they have tried to encourage me to do as best as I can through independent study.

What extra-or co-curricular activities do you take part in, and how do these affect your student experience?

I took a part time writing internship, I wrote for the Guild Media and partook in a filmmaking course. I have gained experience and learnt different skills from each opportunity and I feel I have experienced a more complete side of university as a result.

What are your ambitions for the future and how will your experiences at the University of Liverpool help you in your future career?

I hope to become a writer and publish pop culture essays in my long-term future. My writing skills have helped with this dream!

If you could go back, what advice would you have given yourself before going to University?

Be more social and don’t leave things until the last minute!
