Student Profile: Hannah Mitchell

Why did you choose to study English Literature at the University of Liverpool?

I always used to visit Liverpool and fell in love with the city, I loved the history and community and knew I wanted to study here. When I read more about the course here and looked at the different modules, I loved the diversity available and knew I could grow as a writer and had to study here.

What do you enjoy most about the course, and why?

The variety of modules on selection every year and the different time periods covered. The course allows for a lot of group work and the ability to discuss work with other students which is really beneficial

Can you tell us about an exciting project you have completed on your course?

On my favourite module I had the opportunity to create a series of photography instead of an academic essay based on the literature studied. This was a different approach and one that I found most memorable about the course. It allowed the combination of art and literature which is a personal passion of mine and having the ability to share that with my tutor was truly special.

What does Liverpool have to offer as a city?

A rich history and tight knit community of people who are proud to be from the area and welcome others who visit. There is so much to offer in terms of creative industry with national museums Liverpool and independent publications which welcome students to contribute too. It’s a smaller yet friendlier city which has a homely feel to it.

Can you tell us about the teaching methods/how your learning has been facilitated?

Teaching was a mixture of lectures and smaller tutorials which allowed more chance to talk to other students to share ideas. The lectures were often recorded and shared on canvas which made it easier to review and revise.

What extra-or co-curricular activities do you take part in, and how do these affect your student experience?

I was involved in student societies which gave me the opportunity to make friends outside of my course, similar to my own interests. As my course was part of the school of the arts department I was involved in the SOTA show which collated student performances which was really nice to see and a bittersweet end to an amazing course.

What are your ambitions for the future and how will your experiences at the University of Liverpool help you in your future career?

My future ambitions are to work in the creative field, combining arts and literature or publishing also. In my final year I participated in SOTA300 where I had the opportunity to have publishing experience in an arts magazine which provides useful experience to my ideal future careers.

If you could go back, what advice would you have given yourself before going to University?

Don’t be afraid to take opportunities and get involved in university activities even if it means doing it solo, as there will be other people in the same position which is a perfect way to make new friends.
