Congratulations to undergraduate students Grace Dimbleby, Hannah Hopper and Freya Pattwell, who have all been awarded scholarships by the Department of English in recognition of exceptional performance.
Grace Dimbleby and Freya Pattwell received the Brian Nellist English Attainment Scholarship, which is awarded annually to the two year one students with the best performance in Single Honours or Major (75%) English programmes. It takes the form of a full tuition fee waiver for the second and third years of study, and is named after Brian Nellist MBE, a much-loved member of staff who taught at the University of Liverpool from 1959 until his retirement in 2000.
Grace, a BA English Literature student from Hinckley in Leicestershire, said: “I was honestly overwhelmed when I realised I’d been awarded the scholarship. It will make a real difference for me, both during my studies and in what comes next”.
Freya, who comes from Frodsham and studies BA English, stated: “It is safe to say that I was speechless when I learnt that I had received the award! Above all, I want to express my gratitude to all those at the University and Brian Nellist himself for the opportunity to receive what is such a massive honour.
Meanwhile, Hannah Hopper was awarded the Dame Patricia Routledge Award – worth £3,500 – for the best performance in BA English Literature with Drama Studies at year two. An alumna of the University of Liverpool, the late Dame Patricia graduated with a BA in English Language and Literature in 1951, and went on to enjoy a long, illustrious career on stage and screen.
“I was shocked and delighted to be the recipient of this award”, commented Hannah, from Bristol. “It felt like a huge bonus in my already wonderful university experience!
I was sorry to hear of Dame Patricia's passing so soon after receiving this award – she impacted my life more than I could have imagined.”
