Abstract:
This talk explores how artificial intelligence can enable small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to thrive in the digital economy. Drawing on recent research and industry engagement, it examines the challenges and opportunities SMEs face in adopting AI tools and technologies. The session will highlight insights from two recent studies and introduce a set of practical resources currently under development to support innovation and strategic AI use. By combining academic perspectives with real-world examples, the talk offers a forward-looking view of how SMEs can harness AI to drive growth, creativity, and resilience in an evolving digital landscape.
Bio:
Dr Nisreen Ameen is Associate Professor in Digital Marketing at Royal Holloway, University of London. Her research focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), innovation ecosystems, and inclusive entrepreneurship. She leads high-impact, cross-sector projects that address complex societal challenges through digital innovation. Her work explores AI adoption, digital inclusion, and equitable economic growth, and has been cited by the European Parliament, United Nations ESCWA, and Onward. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in top-tier journals and has delivered expert briefings to organisations including Roche, Gartner, and the House of Lords. As Director of the Digital Organisation and Society Research Centre, she provides strategic leadership in research, industry, and policy engagement, working with partners such as the NHS, Oracle, and Ofcom. Recognised as one of the Top 100 UK Marketing Influencers in 2024, she has a strong track record of academic excellence, interdisciplinary leadership, and real-world impact.
