After graduating with a degree in Biochemistry in 1985, Dr Angus Black returned to the University of Liverpool in 1993 to fulfil his dream of becoming a doctor. In this Donor Spotlight, Angus shares how his own student experience inspired him to support today’s students through the Student Fund.
Tell us about your experience of studying at the University of Liverpool.
A great place to study, full of enthusiastic teaching and learning opportunities. Liverpool has a very rich multi-cultural history going back hundreds of years. Liverpool offers easy access to North Wales, Lancashire and the Lake District. John Lennon Airport is ideal for short-haul flights to European destinations.
What are some of your most memorable experiences from your time at university?
With the help of some wonderful teachers, I realised at the age of around 32 that I could achieve a lifetime ambition of becoming a medical doctor.
Where did life take you after graduation?
I qualified as a General Practitioner but now work independently in Mental Health Services.
What motivated you to give back to the University and support Liverpool students?
I returned to Liverpool as a mature student in 1993 to study medicine and self-funded my way through the five years, resulting in me graduating with significant debt. As a newly qualified Junior Doctor, I was paid less in 1998 than I had earned before medical school in 1993. This perpetuated my debt repayments! Unlike other more fortunate students, my parents were unable to help financially. I worked through my holidays however, as medical training progresses, holidays do become much shorter. And so, in turn, if I can reduce financial stress for those facing similar challenges to my own, then I have achieved a little something positive!
What advice would you give to current students at the University?
Work hard. Be safe. Be kind. Enjoy!
