This summer, Aishah will graduate from Anatomy and Human Biology and take the next step toward her dream of becoming a doctor. Her journey hasn’t been without challenges – from juggling multiple jobs to pursuing her passion for medicine – but thanks to the support of the Liverpool Bursary, Aishah has been able to make the most of every opportunity and enjoy her university experience.
“My experience at university has been amazing. Some of the best moments of my life happened here. It’s been academically tough at times, but it’s taught me so much about who I am and who I want to be.
One of my biggest highlights was having the opportunity to carry out human dissections as part of my course. I’ll never forget the first time I did a dissection – it was such a privilege. That moment helped me realise I wanted to pursue medicine. It sparked something in me.
Receiving the bursary has been such a privilege. Without it, my experience would have looked very different. In my second year, I was working three jobs, and it really affected my academic performance. The bursary gave me a chance to breathe and focus on my studies without constant stress. It made my university experience what it is today. I was able to afford driving lessons, which gave me the independence to commute to my part-time job and placements. Most importantly, it gave me time to revise properly during exams without the pressure of working long hours.
As a Liverpool local, I love the city, and getting the opportunity to study here made me appreciate it even more. Liverpool is just the right size – not too big, not too small – and there’s always something happening. From Eurovision to BBC Weekender, there’s so much life here. I also love watching students from other places fall in love with the city I grew up in. I’m proud to be a Scouser.
The bursary changed everything for me. I used part of it to go on a summer internship in Morocco, and this was my first time abroad alone. I got the amazing opportunity to shadow doctors, work in hospitals, and experience a different healthcare system. My time over there has confirmed what I want to do with my life: work in medicine and become a humanitarian.
If I didn’t have the bursary, I wouldn’t have been able to go abroad. I wouldn’t have had the same motivation to apply for medicine. And I probably would’ve had to work during exam season, which would have impacted my grades again. The support lifted such a heavy weight off my shoulders.
To the donors who make this possible, thank you. Your generosity helped me in ways I can’t even explain. I hope I can make you proud by using everything I’ve learned to help others. That’s what this bursary did – it gave me the space and confidence to follow my dreams.”
