Welcome to the latest instalment of ‘Donor Spotlight’ - our ongoing series celebrating the impact of our alumni and friends giving back to support the next generation of students. In this instalment, we speak to Eric Achu Ndangoh, BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering 1991, who shares why his university experience helped shape his decision to donate to the Student Fund.

Tell us about your time at university. Do you have a favourite memory?

I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Liverpool from 1988 to 1991. My favourite memories include our football games at McNair Hall and teaming up with some students from the School of Law to campaign for prisoners of conscience in 1989.

What inspired you to give back to support students at the University of Liverpool?

I had a tremendous time at the University of Liverpool; the lecturers were excellent, and the support staff were very cooperative. I learned a lot and have used my learnings in my teachings, designs and publications. I would love many more students to have the same opportunity that I had.

Studying at the University was an immensely rewarding experience, and I have achieved a lot since then, which I don’t think I would have achieved if I hadn’t attended university. I love the work you do to promote the image of the University of Liverpool, and I would love to do all I can, as I have always done, to make the University popular and play my part in using the training I received there to improve the lives of the community.

How did your university experience shape your decision to donate?

I gained a lot from my time at the University of Liverpool, both academically and socially. As a scholarship student sponsored by the Cameroon Government, we were often given £28 a week by the University of Liverpool, when our grants from the Cameroon Government were delayed to tide us over, and I really appreciated that. I would also like to extend a helping hand to others in need.

Do you have any advice or words of encouragement that you’d like to share with current students at Liverpool?

Work hard and take some time out to socialise as well. Make your time at Liverpool count for good in the world.

What would you say to fellow alumni considering donating to support students?

I would encourage them to give within their means, as this is a great way to empower our students to keep the University of Liverpool as great as they found it when they got there.

On behalf of the University community, we’d like to thank Eric for sharing his Liverpool memories and for his ongoing support of Liverpool students. If you would like to share your story, please contact us: giving@liverpool.ac.uk.
