Read more about the seminar

With the objective of deepening our understanding of the contemporary role of the media in the representation of rights, we aim to shed light on the subject of why some UK journalists and media sources have become so outspoken against human rights. Our understanding of the public perception of rights as a consequence of media attitudes will also be broadened.

The ultimate aim of the seminar is therefore threefold:

• To develop a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue on the representation of the Human Rights Act, the European Convention and Court in the United Kingdom by bringing together journalists, practitioners and academics.

• To scrutinize the correlation between representation, rhetoric and rights in the media today with a view to understanding whether there has been a ‘turn against rights’ and whether media representation captures the reality of the actual impact of rights.

• To strive towards building a platform for informed public discussion and debate on the future of human rights in the United Kingdom.
