Peer Mentoring
Take advantage of having a peer mentor; they’ve been there and had the silly questions that you think no one has ever had before…they’re there to help and are happy to.
Peer mentoring at Liverpool offers the opportunity for new undergraduate students to gain valuable support at the start of their studies. Our peer mentors will be students who are in their 2nd or 3rd year of study, or perhaps a postgraduate student, all of whom will know what’s it’s like to start university for the first time.
Peer mentors will be there to support you with your transition into university life, with the aim of embedding a sense of belongingness to your university experience. They will help you to build confidence when dealing with new experiences and tell you more about your new university and the wonderful city of Liverpool. They may not necessarily be student studying the same programme as you.
Some areas you might expect to discuss with your mentor include:
- information on your course or university as a whole
- where to find local amenities such as the nearest doctors, shops, cafés, nightlife
- most importantly they are a friendly face for you to go to.
What can a peer mentor help with?
- Mentors can support you with your transition into university life
- They are there to listen and will be able to signpost you to the relevant professional services teams
- You will have an opportunity to ask questions, get feedback and learn from others who have gone through similar experiences and have faced the same issues and challenges
- They can provide low risk advice and guidance
- They can signpost you to relevant academic and professional services staff
- They will be a friendly face on campus.
A peer mentor will not:
- Know everything
- Judge you
- Be able to tackle issues beyond their experience or knowledge base.
