Last week colleagues from Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences gathered for a Research Away Day. The event was attended by over 70 representatives from each of the six departments within the Institute, as well as colleagues from across the Faculties of Health and Life Sciences (HLS), Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), and Science and Engineering (SE).
The event was hosted by the Institute’s Research Team and chaired by the Institute’s Research Lead, Dr Liz Laird. Bringing together researchers from across disciplines, the event aimed to develop cross-departmental and basic-clinical collaborations, as well as identifying and discussing potential research project applications.
Speakers from across the Institute and wider University showcased our research strengths, expertise and potential areas for interdisciplinary collaboration. There were also talks from project leads with successful interdisciplinary funding collaborations and networks. These included Professor Shakila Thangaratinam (Episafe), Professor Michael Beresford (EATC4Children) and Dr Bettina Wilm (Regenerative Medicine Network).
Attendees heard from researchers who have been involved in successful grant applications from a range of external funders. There were also opportunities to network with researchers from across the Institute, Faculty and wider University. The day also featured two collaboration sprint sessions hosted by The Academy, as well as poster sessions advertising individual researchers’ expertise throughout the day.
Dr Liz Laird commented: “We were delighted to host colleagues from across the Institute and faculties for this vibrant collaborative event. There was a clear message from all research departments and schools that the Institute is keen to develop internal and external interdisciplinary collaborations as well as new basic-clinical science partnerships”.
Attendee feedback
"Hearing about the different research in the Departments and Faculties - I have made new connections and will be following up on building a new grant."
"Really helped to get an understanding of HLS. As a HSS faculty member it can be quite confusing to know what is going on in HLS".
