Dr Gemma Ahearne, Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Sociology and Criminology, was awarded Teacher of the Year (Humanities and Social Sciences) at the Guild Awards 2023.

Voted for by students, the Liverpool Guild of Students Awards recognise groups and individuals who have gone above and beyond to have a positive impact on the student experience.

The winners of the Awards were announced at a ceremony that took place in Moundford Hall on Thursday 11th May.

Dr Ahearne was recognised for bringing out the best in her students with her unconditional support and encouragement. Her support for the Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology Society has helped connect students with external professionals and is just one example of her going above and beyond to support all her students’ progression.

Dr Ahearne said: "I believe that teaching can be transgressive, radical and hopeful. It is how we shape communities of care and social justice. Thank you to my students for nominating me and thanks to the Liverpool Guild of Students for such a wonderful event. Congrats to all those nominated and shortlisted. I was in awe of the work being done by student societies and reps across the university".
