On Saturday 25 January, Prof Kanstantsin Dzehtsiarou gave evidence to the representatives of the member states of the Council of Europe considering the reform of the system of election of judges of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

Prof Dzehtsiarou shared his thoughts as to how to make the election of judges more transparent and fair and how to ensure the independence of the Court’s judges. He emphasised the need to have diversity on the bench including professional diversity. He also suggested ways in which the national selection could be improved.

He has finally urged the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to make the interviews with the candidates for the position of the ECtHR judges public and more transparent. These ideas will be reflected in the report that the group will prepare at the end of their work.
