Become a Professional Mentor
Our Professional Mentoring Scheme connects current students studying Law, Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology with professionals from a wide range of sectors. The aim is to help students develop the skills, knowledge and personal attributes needed to succeed in their future careers.
Professional mentors offer invaluable support to our students as they prepare for the world of work. This can include guidance on application processes, advice on CVs and interview techniques, and opportunities to build confidence and networks. In some cases, mentors have also been able to offer work experience to their mentees. Communication can take place by email, phone or video calling, allowing both UK-based and international professionals to take part regardless of location or time zone.
Our students are entering an increasingly competitive job market. We recognise that, in addition to gaining a good degree, they also need a wide range of practical, professional and interpersonal skills that they will not necessarily obtain simply from attending classes. The scheme helps them gain insights into real professional environments and understand how to navigate the transition from university to employment.
Mentors come from a broad range of organisations and backgrounds. Within the legal profession, this includes solicitors from local, regional and international firms, barristers’ chambers, in-house legal teams, the public sector and the courts. Outside the legal sector, we are keen to welcome professionals working in research, policy making, public services, charities, policing, business, education, local government and the wider third sector. This diversity reflects the wide range of career paths our students take after graduation.
In exchange for your time and insight, we are able to offer you access to the talent and knowledge of our student body, which we believe is an invaluable asset to any future employer. According to feedback from last year’s scheme, 100% of mentors who provided feedback said they would recommend it to fellow professionals.
