PhD Research

Postgraduate research students are valued members of our research community.

Many of their projects are funded through the AHRC North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership and the ESRC North West Doctoral Training College, as well as the Wellcome Trust.

A growing number of PhD projects are supported by an external partner, such as the British Library, Unilever, the National Gallery and local archives. The Department also offers some competitive Graduate Teaching Fellowships and fees-only scholarships annually.

Our PhD students have achieved international recognition, including competitive Fellowships awarded by the Library of Congress, the New York State Archives, the American Antiquarian Society and the United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada.

PhD students benefit from training provided through the Liverpool Doctoral College and engage@Liverpool, as well as bespoke departmental training workshops. Each May History PhD students organize a PGR conference to discuss their research and methodologies.
