MA Visual Culture
Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool?
I chose the University of Liverpool because of its strong academic atmosphere, international outlook, and the appeal of the programme’s modules. I was also attracted by the city’s football culture and, above all, the warmth and friendliness of its people. In addition, parts of Liverpool, especially around the Albert Dock, reminded me of the Bund in Shanghai, giving me a special sense of familiarity and connection with the city.
What’s the best thing about studying your programme?
The teaching style, the encouragement from staff, and the focus on reflection and critical thinking helped me to grow quickly and gain confidence in expressing myself.
How do the facilities and/or staff help you with your studies?
In particular, our tutors were always nice and supportive, no matter if it was during or outside class. They encouraged students with both kind words and warm smiles, creating a safe space where speaking up was welcomed, even if mistakes were made. Whenever we contacted them after class, they always did their best to provide solutions, which made us feel at home and gave us a sense of belonging. This effectively helped international students like me build confidence and also deepened our understanding of the subject. When writing important essays, our tutors were open to discussion and offered helpful guidance by suggesting relevant literature based on our chosen direction, which inspired us to develop broader and more critical perspectives in our writing.
What has been your highlight of your time at Liverpool so far?
For me, the highlight has been both academic growth and the inspiration I gained here, together with international friendships, the welcoming campus atmosphere, and the healing beauty of Liverpool’s changing seasons.
How do you believe undertaking postgraduate study will help your career prospects?
Studying at the University of Liverpool has helped me develop critical thinking, communication skills, and confidence. I have also become more mature and rigorous than before, with a more comprehensive way of thinking. I believe these qualities will benefit my future career by enabling me to face challenges with a broader perspective and greater adaptability.
What advice would you give to anybody considering postgraduate study at Liverpool?
My advice is to stay open-minded and not be afraid to speak up. Most importantly, keep going and don’t give up, because in the end, you will find that your year in Liverpool has been truly worthwhile.
