PGT student profile - Ignacia Inostroza, Chile
MSc Data Science and Communication
Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool?
I chose the University of Liverpool because of its solid reputation in research and the curricular design of the Data Science and Communication MSc. With no background in Computer Science required, this programme offers theory and methods of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, specifically in the field of Communications —which is my background, as I’m a journalist. I also chose Liverpool because I really wanted the experience of living in the UK, and it was much more affordable than London.
What’s the best thing about studying your programme?
I learned how to code! I’ve also worked with methods like sentiment analysis, topic modelling, emotion detection, and plotted data using different visualisation libraries. Beyond the programme, the University provides opportunities to participate in research within the academic context. I was able to join an internship developing AI-powered experiences for students, alongside my dissertation.
How do the facilities and/or staff help you with your studies?
Campus is wonderful. You have everything in one place, in a very nice green environment. Staff are always available, and the facilities are purposefully adapted to support the student experience. Just having a library open 24/7 is a great example. Lecturers as well: in the Communication and Media Department, I was able to ask about anything I wasn’t 100% clear on, and I must say I used the office hours of every lecture I had. Finally, the Sports Centre is great. They have a fully equipped gym, a variety of classes, and the swimming pool which is just wonderful.
Did you access any of the support services available to you? If so, how did you find the service?
Yes, I received guidance from the Career Studio to enhance my CV, and with that I was able to get a part-time job and later an internship. At one point I experienced a very stressful situation, and I was able to cope with it thanks to the Mental Health Advisory Service (MHAS). I also resolved every query I had about student life through the International Advice and Guidance team, from how to manage expenses better, to activities during the Christmas break, which can feel a bit lonely for international students who stay on campus.
What has been your highlight of your time at Liverpool so far?
Being able to participate in an AI Hackathon organised by the Department of Computer Science and Careers & Employability. We won second place, and I met a new group of friends. Also, getting my first 80, and taking part in the Guild’s gardening volunteer group!
How do you believe undertaking postgraduate study will help your career prospects?
I believe it’s given me an entirely new framework to develop my career. Everything I’ve learned came from excellent lecturers, so I know the knowledge is solid. Now it’s up to me to decide how I take this into the field.
What advice would you give to anybody considering postgraduate study at Liverpool?
It’s a marvellous experience, and you should make the most of every minute as it goes very fast. Be active, participate in class, and enjoy the social life. If you come from a country with a warm climate, I’d also recommend sports and Vitamin D during winter!
