Yannis Tzioumakis, Professor of Film and Media Industries in the Department of Communication and Media, appeared earlier today in BBC News to comment on the corporate takeover Warner Bros, HBO Max and some of other Warner Bros. Discovery assets by streaming giant Netflix for an estimated $72 billion dollars. The media industries continue to evolve and consolidate as streaming platforms, tech companies and device manufacturers understand that the libraries of the so-called legacy media companies represent extremely valuable "content" that will enable them to achieve strategic objectives.
Warner Bros.' films and HBO's TV series will provide Netflix with an incredible range of quality content, helping it to continue to stay ahead of the competition in the streaming market. On the other hand, the power that Netflix will now hold as an increasingly integrated media company is a cause for concern and therefore all eyes will be on the media regulators who have to decide if this merger can be approved.
