The Nordic game conference was a brilliant experience as an aspiring game designer and game artist. To be able to experience first-hand other indie developers showcase their hard work to the public showing their unique mechanics or artistic style, the multiple in-depth talks throughout the days on coding, music and art, and the final day of master classes being my favourite and most beneficial.
As a third-year Game Design student, the conference helped me develop confidence and inspiration for the games industry and the people within it. People had come from all around the world - Europe, America, Australia etc. It brought to light how global the game design industry is and helped me gain excitement and not just fear for the future.
The talks varied from all subjects in the industry like coding, music, design, and art. It was a beautiful introduction to my future career. My most beneficial day was the final day - the masterclasses. As I personally aspire to follow the artistic route in the industry, I gravitated towards the art director for Payday 3 talk. Here, I learnt many valuable and in-depth tools that I can put to practice - flexibility in your skills for concepts being one of them.
I liked how the master classes and the talks overall throughout the days were not general or common sense but individual experiences people in the industry had been through, providing their mistakes and insights for what best to do. I would certainly recommend this for any other Game Design students as it gave me a practical experience for the future as a final year student going into the industry soon.
