We are one of the longest established international centres for the study of Catalan. Our interests cover the language, literature, popular culture, art and politics of the Catalan people.
Our native speakers will teach you their language and share their enthusiasm of all things Catalan.
Study Catalan as part of Hispanic Studies
You will study Catalan as part of Hispanic Studies, rather than as a stand-alone course. Hispanic studies is a diverse course covering the languages, literatures, cultures and histories of Spain, Portugal and Latin America.
As a language student you will spend at least seven months in Year 3 studying or working in a Catalan-speaking region on your year abroad.
You will learn about the history, society and culture of the Catalan region at the same time as you learn to write and speak the language. Students on our BA in Hispanic Studies (RR45) may have the option to take Beginners' modules in Catalan Language in final year.
See our module descriptors pages to find out more. Hispanic Studies modules are coded with an "HISP" prefix.
We have strong links with the Institut Ramón Llull to spread worldwide interest in Catalan language and culture. We have a fully-equipped language laboratory and a Modern Languages Resource Centre that can also be used for private study. Our programmes offer excellent career preparation and a launchpad for postgraduate study and research.
Our staff are high-profile researchers and publishers with interests that cover literature, popular culture, politics, society and linguistics. Learn more on our research page and feel free to contact us to discuss collaborations.
