Dr Nicola Tempest ready to speak with Paula Radcliffe and Chris Thompson

Dr Nicola Tempest, consultant gynaecologist, senior lecturer and host of the Between2Ovaries podcast, recently appeared on Paula’s Run Club podcast in a Women’s Health Special episode, to dispel some of the myths around running, periods, pregnancy and menopause, ensuring all listeners were well informed about what is ‘normal’.

Paula’s Run Club is a weekly podcast hosted by Paula Radcliffe and Chris Thompson. Paula Radcliffe is a long-distance runner, multiple medal winner and world record holder, including the women’s marathon record for 17 years. Chris Thompson is also a long-distance runner who competed in the 10,000 metres at the 2012 and 2020 Summer Olympics.

Each week, Paula and Chris discuss various aspects of running, including nutrition and hydration, motivation, and training tips. They also seek to address the anxieties and uncertainties anyone can experience around running.

In this Women’s Health Special, Dr Tempest focused on information and advice for women runners. This included running tips for young girls starting menstruation, explaining the changes they should expect in their bodies, and what it means to have a ‘regular’ cycle. She also advised on supplements, running during pregnancy and whether a period will really stop you getting a Personal Best.

Dr Tempest said, “It was great to ensure good quality information was given on this podcast, as in a chronically under-exercised population, we need to promote, not discourage, movement at all stages of the menstrual cycle and life for women”.
