Postdocs can often be an overlooked group of early career researchers at higher education institutions, but IVES ensures that our postdocs are well supported by allocating funds that encourage their career development and wellbeing in multiple ways.

On Tuesday 27 June, the IVES Postdoc Association held their inaugural mini conference in the William Henry Duncan Building.

The day started with a workshop on managing research portfolios by Professor Greg Hurst. This was followed by six research presentations and three poster presentations by postdocs. They sparked lively discussions amongst the group, which continued through lunch.

The idea to hold a mini conference was originally discussed by Revathy Krishnamurthi, Cordelia Dunai and Sian Pottenger - core members of the Postdoc Association - during a networking event marking last year’s national Postdoc Appreciation Week.

The event provided lots of food for thought and the audience, fuelled by cookies, ranked the presenters on three criteria: 'presentation engagement', 'impact and innovation' and 'scientific rigour'.

The winners were as follows:

Oral presentation:

1st prize: Dr. Malaka de Silva

Very close runner-up: Dr. Claire Hetherington

Poster Presentation:

Kaitlin Schaal

Runner-up: Dr. Aisling Brady

Winners received prizes of Blackwell gift cards.

Overall, it was an enjoyable event and a great opportunity to network and prepare research presentations for conferences. It also provided ideas for our next event!
