National Oceanography Centre

The University of Liverpool hosts one of the sites of the UK’s National Oceanography Centre and the British Oceanographic Data Centre, situated in the Joseph Proudman Building adjacent to the School of Environmental Sciences.

Scientists at the NOC in Liverpool carry out internationally-leading research in climate change, tides, global sea level rise, and the operational forecasting of the UK marine environment.

Enhanced carbon export driven by internal tides over the mid-Atlantic ridge). The project is led by the University of Liverpool’s Prof Jonathan Sharples. Jonathan is working with Dr Jo Hopkins and Dr André Palóczy from the NOC, using novel wirewalker drifting moorings to measure how internal waves affect the light experienced by phytoplankton within the deep chlorophyll maximum.

C-Streams

(The Gulf Stream control of the North Atlantic carbon sink).This joint UK-US project is led by Prof Ric Williams at the University of Liverpool. Ric is collaborating with Drs Peter Brown, Darren Rayner and Louis Clement at the NOC in determining how the Gulf Stream draws anthropogenic carbon out of the atmosphere and eventually stores this carbon away in the deep ocean.

N-ARC (Nitrogen fixation in the Arctic Ocean)

The project is led by the University of Liverpool’s Prof Claire Mahaffey. Claire is working with Prof. Maeve Lohan from the University of Southampton and Dr Jo Hopkins and Dr Mar Benavides from the NOC, to investigate the activity and diversity of nitrogen fixing microbes in the Arctic Ocean and disentangle the environmental factors driving their prevalence in cold polar waters.
