World Music Day 2021

World Music Day is celebrated each year on 21 June to celebrate music from around the world, also coinciding with the Summer Solstice. Originating from France, entitled ‘Fete de la Musique’ this event has become an international day of celebration, and was first celebrated in 1982, following approval from Jack Lange, who was Minister for Art and Culture in France, with support and encouragement from French composer Maurice Fleuret.

Music plays a huge part in our everyday life and can help us with our moods and focus, as well as providing a means for reminiscing and setting atmospheres. Without music what are we? As Stevie Wonder once said “Music is a world within itself.  It’s a language we all understand.” How true was Stevie?

Distributed Algorithms CDT World Music Day Playlist

We have a breadth of students and researchers here in our CDT and we asked a selection of them to send us their all-time favourite song or a song/tune that helps them to focus or study or a track that makes them feel good!

So, here’s our ‘DA CDT Playlist’ for World Music Day 2021!  We hope you discover some new tunes and find some firm favourites, too.

9 songs you seriously need to listen too

1. CDT Director, Simon Maskell: Satan by Orbital. “It helps me to move quickly!

2. Ben: Resonance by HOME. “I’ve been listening to this song recently when I’ve been studying, it’s quite relaxing!”

3. Mehdi: One More Time by Daft Punk “This is one of my favourite songs.”

4. Matthew: The Doors - Peace Frog  and LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out “Both are songs that I completely love.”

5. Adam: Cannibal Tree by Yenkee “This is a song I study too.”

6. Nell: Katrina and The Waves - Walking on Sunshine. “It's definitely a feel good one - it's even in the lyrics!”

7. Sara (CDT Support Officer): Mountain to Move by Nick Mulvey “The vibe of the music contains nods to Ethnomusicology and has such uplifting lyrics and beats.  I urge you to watch and get lost in this track!”

8. Kelli (CDT Centre Manager): Oye Como Va by Santana “Reminds me of summertime in Southern California”.

9. Oisin: Ghost Love Score by Nightwish "This is a 10 minute metal opera epic with fantastic performances all round, especially the singer Floor Jansen who sings in both operatic and rock styles in this song.  The song is fantastic for motivation - especially in the gym!

A quote from one of the master's of music...

“What I have to say is all in the music.  If I want to say anything, I write a song.”  Sir Paul McCartney
