Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

In the Department of Chemistry, we are dedicated to fostering a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) where all individuals are treated fairly and respectfully, and where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment that values the diverse backgrounds, perspectives and experiences of our staff and students.

As part of the School of Physical Sciences, the Department of Chemistry supports and contributes to the School’s continuing Athena SWAN work, following the renewal of its Silver Athena SWAN award in 2022. This reflects our commitment to advancing gender equality and to driving broader improvements in equity, diversity and inclusion across the department.

We work closely with the School of Physical Sciences EDI Committee and actively participate in initiatives that promote equal opportunities. The Department also has its own group of EDI Champions, comprising staff and students, who collaborate to promote awareness, share resources, support colleagues, and drive forward actions that enhance our departmental culture.

We are committed to the principles of equality and diversity legislation and encourage ongoing training, discussion and reflection to embed these values into all aspects of our work. Through coordinated efforts with the Chemistry EDI Director, the School’s EDI Committee, University Staff Networks and our wider community, we aim to identify and address barriers to inclusion, monitor the impact of our initiatives, and create a positive environment for all.
