Profile of Matt, alumni student

Matt Dickinson

Matt Dickinson is now working at the Department of Health and Social Care as an Investment Appraisal Lead

I graduated in 2021 with a degree in Politics. My main interests were (and still are!) British Politics, Psephology, and Environmental Politics. Most of my modules aligned with these areas – particular highlights were the Voter Behaviour, Parliamentary Politics, and Rhetoric modules. My dissertation combined two topics of interest, exploring how Devolution (specifically the introduction of Combined Authorities) has affected carbon reduction policies in England. As part of my degree, I also did six-months work experience in the Strategy and Policy Department at a local Hospital. If anyone gets the chance to do work experience as part of their degree I would highly recommend you do so!

After initially working in the Social Investment sector, I’m now working at the Department of Health and Social Care as an Investment Appraisal Lead – here I co-ordinate the appraisal process for Departmental and NHS business cases, playing an active role in making sure that programmes and projects are delivered on time, on budget and shoe good value for tax-payers money. This gives me an insight in to all the Department is doing, which sets me up well to move across into different lines of work. Going forward I hope to have stints in Policy or Strategy work, before moving on to more leadership-based roles.
