Alumni of Politics, Carl Cashman

Carl Cashman

Carl Cashman loved his time at the University studying Philosophy and Politics.

Since graduating in 2015 Carl has gone on to pursue his passion for both local and national politics, standing in the regional, local and parliamentary elections in Merseyside. He was first elected to Knowsley Council in 2016 and was subsequently elected to Liverpool City Council in 2023 where he now leads the City Council’s Liberal Democrat group.

Carl was involved in elections throughout his time at University and fondly remembers a former lecturer telling him off and asking him to balance out his studies and elections after getting a bad grade in one of his first year modules. Carl enjoyed many politics modules during his time at the University, particularly modules on ideology including one taught by Stuart Wilks-Heeg in which Carl used an essay to critique Prof Wilk-Heeg’s own book! He got a first in the essay, which is testament to the Professors willingness to accept good arguments!
