Research
Pete has published multiple peer reviewed papers across the area of Sustainable Decision Making, Communicating Radiation Risk, Skills Development, Nuclear Policy and Radiological Assessment, and is author of the book Airborne Radioactive Discharges and Human Health Effects. A summary of his current research areas is provided below:
Radiation Protection Science and Emergency Preparedness
Research focused on advancing the science and practice of radiological protection, including radiation risk assessment, optimisation, emergency preparedness, and response. This work contributes to the development of international radiological protection frameworks, supporting evidence-based approaches to protecting people and the environment from ionising radiation in both planned and emergency exposure situations.
Sustainable Nuclear Policy, Regulation and Radioactive Waste Management
Research examining the integration of sustainability principles into nuclear policy, regulation, new build programmes, decommissioning, and radioactive waste management. This work explores how technical, environmental, social, and economic considerations can be balanced to support responsible decision-making and the long-term stewardship of nuclear liabilities.
Risk Communication, Stakeholder Engagement and Public Trust in Nuclear Technologies
Research investigating the role of communication, stakeholder engagement, and public participation in nuclear decision-making. This includes the development of approaches to risk communication, public understanding of radiation, social licence, and trust-building, with the aim of improving governance and supporting informed dialogue around nuclear technologies and radioactive waste management.
