About
Professor Peter Bryant is the Inaugural Director of the Chadwick Institute for Nuclear Innovation and Professor of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Policy at the University of Liverpool. He is an environmental and radiation protection specialist with nearly 20 years of experience across the nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear power, radioactive waste management, decommissioning and contaminated land.
Before joining the University, he held senior leadership positions including CEO and Director General of the World Nuclear Transport Institute (WNTI), Director of ESG & Radiation Strategy at Sizewell C, and Head of Environment, Decommissioning & Radiation Safety at Sizewell C/EDF. His work has spanned nuclear policy and regulation, environmental permitting, radiation protection, nuclear safety, radioactive waste management, decommissioning and emergency preparedness.
Professor Bryant is an internationally recognised authority on radiation protection and nuclear policy. He serves on the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) Committee 4 and is Vice Chair of ICRP Task Group 120 on Radiological Protection for Radiation Emergencies and Malicious Events. He is also a member of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency Expert Group on International Recommendations (EGIR) and was appointed by the UK Secretary of State to the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM).
He has extensive international experience in stakeholder engagement, risk communication and nuclear policy, supporting numerous International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) missions and international capacity-building programmes.
A former President of the Society for Radiological Protection, Professor Bryant’s work at Liverpool focuses on connecting science, policy and practice to support innovation across the nuclear sector.
