Becky Davidson-Lund
MA Composition for Film, TV and Games
Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool?
It was a combination of the course and the city. I felt that compared to other film composition courses, this one offered the best balance between theory and practical and I thought it would provide me with the skills and opportunities to build a strong portfolio. The liveliness and friendliness of the city was also appealing, and I thought it would be a great place to live for my master’s year.
What’s the best thing about studying your programme?
I found the collaborative nature of the programme (although daunting at first) to be really beneficial. We often listened to one another’s work and discussed it as a group, as well as working with each other in less structured ways, both providing the opportunity to get informal and friendly feedback and learn from our peers.
How do the facilities help you with your studies?
The facilities were also a big reason I chose to come here, and they have helped me significantly with my work. Having access to mac suites, DAWs, recording studios and equipment etc. has enabled me to complete my work without restriction and has also allowed for opportunities such as recording sessions with live musicians. Having come from a more classical background, these facilities have also helped me learn the more technical side of the industry and the staff are always happy to help should you need it.
What has been your highlight of your time at Liverpool so far?
I would say I’ve just really enjoyed everything that there is to get involved with in Liverpool. I have loved being a part of the university societies but also joining sports teams and music ensembles in the community, who are all so welcoming. There’s always something going on, so if I’m not busy with a society or my studies, then I can head into the city centre and find some sort of event to enjoy.
How do you believe undertaking postgraduate study will help your career prospects?
I think during my time on this course my skillset has significantly expanded and I have learnt things which are hugely important when trying to get work within the film music industry. It has also enabled me to build a strong portfolio, which, again, I can take with me when trying to find work and will hopefully give me a head start in a highly competitive area.
What advice would you give to anybody considering postgraduate study at Liverpool?
I think that postgraduate studies can be challenging – it’s therefore important to find a course, university and city that you think are right for you. Saying that, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and have met some amazing people, so from my experience I would say Liverpool is a great place to come for postgraduate studies. It is somewhere that, when made the most of, can contribute positively to all areas of your life.
