Venue: School of Engineering Common Room, Harrison Hughes Building, First Floor

1. Dr. Xiaoyu Liu

Presentation Title: Biomechanical simulation and testing of eye injury

Summary: The eye is characterized by its complex structure and fragile material. Injuries to the eye would lead to serious visual impairment or blindness. Most of the eye injuries are the direct or indirect results of impact force. Although tissue lesions and clinical manifestations for eye injuries were well understood, their pathological mechanisms have not been investigated thoroughly. My research aimed to conduct a quantitative analysis on  several eye injuries using finite element method. Also, based on probability theory, the mechanism of eye injuries were achieved in the macro and micro level.

Biography: Dr. Xiaoyu Liu is currently an associate Profossor in the School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Beihang University. He is also a staff in the Key Laboratory for Biomechanics and Mechanobiology of Ministry of Education and Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Biomedical Engineering. His research interests include biomechanical testing and modeling on eye trauma, injury mechanism, and development of testing instrument and rehabilitative device. He is now a committee member of Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering (Biomechanics branch and rehabilitation branch).

 2. Dr. FangJun Bao, MD, PhD

Presentation Title: Applying biomechanical engineering techniques to ocular applications

Presentation Summary: The four major area of my research will be explored in this presentation. This include 1. Experiment platform establishment for ocular biomechanics, 2. The evaluation of ocular biomechanical properties, 3. The application of Finite Element (FE) Modeling in clinical practice and 4. Mathematical analysis of corneal topography.

Biography: The associate senior doctor of the Eye Hospital, and the research group head of Ocular Biomechanics Group, Wenzhou Medical University. Dr Bao was awarded as the Honorary Visiting Professor of University of Liverpool. He got the international travel grant in ARVO meeting. Until now, he has published more than 30 papers and got involved in more than 4 national research funding of China.
