Artist in Residence: Emily Howard

Welcome

Emily Howard

The Department of Mathematical Sciences was delighted to host award-winning composer Dr Emily Howard as Artist in Residence. From February to November 2015, this collaboration was funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The residency pairs a leading composer with a background in mathematics, with a leading mathematics department eager to engage with art and artists.

During her stay, Dr Howard had wide-ranging discussions with researchers in the department and across the University. Through these conversations, she was able to absorb ideas from current mathematical and scientific research that then inform her own work. By asking questions about what inspiration scientists take from art and about differences and similarities in creative processes between science and art, she also encouraged discussions across disciplines. As part of the residency, a series of events – performances, lectures and seminars – took place, internationally and in Liverpool.‌
