Jiayue Zhang
The Transformed Laotong Relationship – Queerness within Female Relationships on the Move
Biography
Jiayue holds a BA from Nankai University (2023) and a MSc from the University of Edinburgh (2024), both related to translation studies. She is currently under the supervision of Dr Ting Guo and Dr Lyn Marven. Her research project looks at the nuanced representations of a laotong relationship, an intense female relationship, across literature and film through a case study of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Outside research, Jiayue is teaching a series of sessions about translation theory and practice in her home department. She was one of the editors of Critical Thinking and Critical Writing [ISBN: 978-7-04059833-9], a college-level textbook in English academic writing.
Research interests
Jiayue has a strong research interest in gender and translation in general. In particular, she looks at the translation of queerness and the queer theorisation of translation. Apart from queer translation studies, she is also interested in transmedia studies and adaptation studies
Jiayue contributed to the workshop ‘Lost and Found in Translation’ in Methods Fair at Manchester (2025) and is part of the ‘L&FIT’ network led by Dr Ruth Abou Rached. She also gave a talk in Arts PGR Conference at Bristol (2025) regarding the transformation of laotong relationships in different contexts and medias.
