On the 18th of February, the Scausländer student newspaper will celebrate its fifth anniversary at 1pm in Lecture Theatre 3 of the 502 building. Written by Dan Smith-Murphy, a Final Year student in German and French.
What is the Scausländer Zeitung?
Founded in 2021 by German final year students, with the assistance of Senior Lecturer Hanna Magedera, the German student newspaper has been taken over year after year by teams of finalists. In its fifth year, the team is made up of five members: Sophie Allen (History and German), Alison Smith (Law and German), Daniel Smith-Murphy (German, French and Spanish), Esmé Wall (German, Spanish and Portuguese) and Natalie Woodhead (History and German). Articles are written in German for a variety of rubrics, including Student Life (Studentenleben), Food for Thought (Denkanstoß), Year Abroad (Ausland), but is not restricted to traditional newspaper-style articles, with the Creative Writing rubric (Kreatives Schreiben) particularly popular amongst first-year students. BookTok-style videos of recommendations of interesting novels and year abroad videos offer the opportunity to learn more about life in different places in Germany and Austria, as well as find the next (German) book for your TBR list!
