Applications are invited for the Manuel Irujo Scholarship in Basque Studies funded by the Etxepare Basque Institute: one fees-only bursary to support a Master of Research (MRes) in Basque Studies beginning in September 2019. The Scholarship provides full fees at the Home/EU student rate (approx. £4,260) for students undertaking the MRes in Modern Languages and Cultures (Basque Studies pathway).

Subject areas

We encourage applications from students wishing to undertake research related to the language, the cultural production, the cultural history or the politics of the Basque Country.

We also welcome applications that are comparative or relational and create links between aspects of Basque society and culture and their manifestation in other cultural, national and/or linguistic areas. Possible focuses for study include: cultural politics and the politics of culture; popular culture; film and visual culture; literary studies; digital culture; gender and sexuality; transnational, postnational and postcolonial studies; migration and diaspora; memory and representation.

Application and selection process

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence. Applicants are required to make contact with Dr Gorka Mercero Altzugarai (mercerog@liverpool.ac.uk) for assistance in formulating a research proposal. Download the Manuel Irujo MRes bursary expression of interest form.

Completed expressions of interest should reach the department by 31 July 2019. Applicants for a Manuel Irujo Scholarship must also make a formal application for admittance to the MRes in Modern Languages and Cultures (Basque Studies pathway) at the University of Liverpool by that same date.
