The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Liverpool is delighted to announce Pep Guardiola as the keynote speaker for the 2018 Annual E. Allison Peers Symposium.

This year’s symposium will consider new movements and the latest cutting-edge research within the discipline of Iberian and Latin American Studies, with a special emphasis on sports, politics and culture. Our renowned Peers Annual Lecture will be delivered by Pep Guardiola, professional football manager and former football player, in conversation with staff from the Department.

The conversation will be followed by live questions posed by the audience, and will establish a fruitful dialogue with the ‘Football, Politics and Culture’ panel. In this panel, three leading scholars (Dr Par Kumaraswami –University of Reading, Professor Matthew Brown –University of Bristol and Dr Louise Johnson –University of Sheffield) will present their research on the topic within the Hispanic world. The 2018 Symposium will also host the launch of the brand-new Bulletin of Contemporary Hispanic Studies (Liverpool University Press).

The E Allison Peers Symposium is an annual symposium hosted by the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures since 2009. It is named for Edgar Allison Peers (1891-1952), Gilmour Chair of Spanish at Liverpool for thirty years from 1922, founder of the Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA) and the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, and a pioneer of Spanish and Catalan Studies.

This year's symposium will take place on Wednesday 21 November 2018, 4.00-7.30pm, in the Sherrington Building (Map ref: Building 311, D9).
