University of Liverpool Catalan Centenary
2026 marks the centenary of Catalan Studies at the University of Liverpool.
We are the pioneering centre for Catalan Studies in the United Kingdom, introduced by Edgar Allison Peers in the 1920s, who specialised in the works of Ramon Llull. In 2026, we are celebrating 100 years during which the historic ties between Great Britain and Catalonia have continued to flourish. The department at Liverpool has brought Catalan language to countless generations of students and the wider public, as well as promoting and researching Catalan literature, history, politics, sport, music, architecture, gastronomy, and performing arts, to name but a few.
Our aim has always been to promote Catalan Studies and to share knowledge about Catalonia and the other territories where Catalan is the native language. Liverpool and Catalonia, united by a shared industrial past, innovation and creativity in the present, and a thirst for building thriving civic futures, proudly come together in this unique celebration of one hundred years of cooperation and dialogue.
