Dialogue 2: The Liquid Border: From Frontier to Fortress

This dialogue will examine liquid borderscapes – such as rivers, lakes and seas – as liminal spaces within the context of migration, whether interpreted as colonial frontiers, spaces of violence, or facilitators for cross-border transportation. Bringing historical perspectives from travelling Roma around the turn of the twentieth century into conversation with insights into migration and penal heritage in French Guiana, the session will interrogate the historical relevance and ongoing tensions around liquid borders, migration and containment.
