On Wednesday, 29 October, the DAAD lecturer, Lena, and I, a DAAD Young Ambassador and finalist in German, hosted an event in the Language Lounge called “Kaffee und Kuchen”, translating to coffee and cake!
As this year’s DAAD young ambassador, my role is to promote studying the German language and visiting or even studying in Germany through the organisation of German-related events. Therefore, alongside the DAAD lecturer, Lena, we organised and hosted our very first event: “Kaffee und Kuchen”.
“Kaffee und Kuchen” is a quintessential piece of culture from Germany and Austria, where it is called a “Jause”, where friends gather in a quaint café to catch up and talk over coffee and some delicious cake. This event aimed to emulate this piece of German culture in Liverpool, allowing for students of German, exchange students from German-speaking countries, or anyone who fancied coffee and cake, to form new connections and practice speaking German.
Lena and Natalie:

We were pleased that over thirty people joined us, allowing for the intermingling of a diverse group of students and lecturers with varying German abilities to meet and speak German. Additionally, during the event, Lena took charge of filming some exciting German language-themed videos, which will become available during #ShoutOutToGerman Week in January 2026. Watch this space to see these videos!
There are more German-themed events planned over the year. We hope to see you there!
