AI Discovery Day 2nd Place Winner – Ahmad Mansuri

Posted on: 27 October 2025 in Posts

Ahmad Mansuri, PGR in Architecture, recently came second in the “AI Discovery Day: Powering Research & Innovation with NVIDIA and Dell Technologies”, an industry-academic research showcase event. Ahmad discusses his research with us below.

Traditional bamboo roof structures are essential to Indonesia’s vernacular architecture, known for their expressive forms and sustainable materials. However, their construction depends heavily on labor-intensive craftsmanship, making replication difficult. This research introduces a human–robot collaboration (HRC) workflow that combines computational design, adaptive joinery, and robotic assembly to overcome this challenge. Our approach features parametric modeling and optimization of double-curved bamboo surfaces, a custom joint system, and robotic handling, bending, and placement of bamboo rods. The 1/4-scale prototype shows improved assembly precision, controlled bending behavior, and effective human–robot interaction. By utilizing computational form-finding, Genetic Algorithm for Multi-Objective Structural Optimization, and data-driven simulation, this method connects traditional craftsmanship with automated fabrication and assembly. Through robotic technology, the study demonstrates a practical, material-aware, and reproducible computational-to-fabrication pipeline that promotes sustainable and industry-relevant human–robot collaboration solutions, offering a scalable approach for automated modern bamboo construction architecture.
