During the summer 2023, the School ran the first edition of the Graduate Impact Assistant (GIA) Scheme, funded by the Research Culture Fund, Research England. Run on a competitive basis and drawing on a previous successful pilot undertaken within the English Department, the Scheme aimed to support impact projects while helping PGRs acquire an understanding as well as practical experience of impact, and develop impact-related skills.
Professor Luca Csepely-Knorr’s collaborative research project, ‘Women of the Welfare Landscape’ was one of four case studies, featured at the launch of Historic Environment Scotland’s new Learning and Outreach Framework, ‘Making Sense of Scotland’. Historic Environment Scotland is the lead public body set up to investigate, care for and promote Scotland’s historic environment. Designed to forge deeper connections between Scotland's heritage and its people, the framework prioritises diversity, creativity and accessibility.
Recently organised by the Liverpool School of Architecture, with the partnership of Hong Kong University and Mei Ho House, this 7-day long, Hong Kong-based international housing workshop focused on post-war, high-density housing estates with integrated plinths.

A book on the United Africa Company has just been published with Bloomsbury. The book is part of a wider project on the mercantile architecture of Western Africa. Kindly funded by the Leverhulme Trust, and in collaboration with Unilever archives, the project was led by Professor Iain Jackson within the school's AHUWA research centre. This open access book tells a new and untold history of the architecture of West Africa in the colonial era, as revealed for the first time through the archives of the United Africa Company (UAC).
Following engagement with the Chinese Community in Liverpool through the project "Cabinet of Memories” in September 2024, the Liverpool School of Architecture has supported Liverpool City Council with the design plan of installing of the two stone lions gifted from China to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Shanghai-Liverpool as twin cities.
The architecture trip to Ghana was for the third year AHUWA studio to explore the cities of Accra and Kumasi and to visit the site that will form the basis of the semester 2 design project.
The Liverpool School of Architecture (LSA) recently hosted an exciting three-day AI-driven design workshop, bringing together undergraduate, master's, and PhD students to explore the creative potential of generative AI tools. Using Midjourney and Adobe Firefly, participants engaged in a structured competition designed to challenge traditional design thinking while developing technical proficiency with AI-assisted workflows. The workshop was led by Carlos Medel-Vera and Sandy Britton, with special guest William Gates, Adjunct Professor at the Boston Architectural College and a leading expert in architecture and AI. The project was funded by the University of Liverpool's Centre for Innovation in Education (CIE) through the CIE Innovation Fund (CIEF2024-8).
We are proud to announce that the Designing for Neurodiversity research has been granted an UKRI, AHRC Curiosity Award [AH/Z507246/1], an 18-month project led by Prof. Rosa Urbano Gutierrez (Manchester School of Architecture) and Johanna Muszbek (Liverpool School of Architecture).
Congratulations to Nurcihan Bektas, who has been awarded her PhD in November 2024. Nurcihan’s thesis was entitled ‘Assessment of Thermal Comfort and Microclimate in a Traditional Settlement in Türkiye (Gelemic Village in Keles District of Bursa City)’ . Nurcihan’s PhD study was supervised by Dr Haniyeh Mohammadpourkarbasi, Professor Steve Sharples and Dr Giamila Quattrone.

Dilek’s thesis was entitled ‘Life Cycle Carbon and Cost Assessment of Prefabricated Retrofit Elements for EnerPHit in Türkiye’s Warm-Temperate Climate Region’ and Dilek’s research was supervised by Dr Haniyeh Mohammadpourkarbasi and Professor Steve Sharples.

On Monday 12 May, and as part of a formal event on what turned out to be the warmest day of the year, the School of the Arts had the pleasure of officially welcoming Yannis Tzioumakis as its newest Professor! As it is tradition, new Professors in the School are invited to give an inaugural lecture that tends to focus on their research and outlines their future plans and research priorities.
On the 28th April, the School of Architecture hosted an exciting event that created a dialogue between students and the Liverpool City Council. This semester, second-year undergraduate and graduate students have been designing urban and architectural strategies to revitalise the area around Liverpool’s Chinatown and its connection to the waterfront. The area is strategically important for articulating the connection between Liverpool’s city centre, Chinatown and the Baltic Triangle, an importance already acknowledged by the City Council through the recent land acquisition for the new Chinatown and the construction of the new Baltic railway station in the area.
A new reading group, associated with the ERC/UKRI KantianDESERT project will start on 21 May. All are welcome, especially those with broad research interests in social justice, law, political and moral philosophy and related topics.
MA Applied Linguistics & TESOL student Weihao Zhao has received a Commendation in this year’s British Council Master’s in English Language Teaching Dissertation Awards for his Dissertation “The Role of pragmalinguistic recasting in E-mail requests: a study of Chinese learners in the UK."
