Langmuir Trough

The Langmuir trough enables the controlled deposition of molecular monolayers and multilayers onto solid substrates at the air-water or water-water interface.

The film can be deposited angling the substrate at different orientations leading to either a Langmuir- Blodget Film (vertical) or a Langmuir-Schaefer film (horizontal).

A compression isotherm for the deposition of the molecule on the substrate, usually an amphiphilic molecule (a molecule possessing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties e.g. lipids) is recorded.
