Professor Terry Jones received the Lifetime Trainer Award from ENT UK at their Research Showcase Meeting in London earlier this month.
ENT UK is the national professional membership body representing Ear, Nose and Throat / Head, and Neck surgery in the UK. The Lifetime Trainer Award recognises Professor Jones’ contribution to head and neck surgical training.
Professor Jones is a clinical academic based within the University of Liverpool's Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology (ISMIB) and an Honorary Consultant Otolaryngologist / Head and Neck Surgeon at University Hospitals of Liverpool Group. He is the Director of the Liverpool Head and Neck Centre (LHNC), one of the largest treatment and research facilities for head and neck cancer in the world. It comprises more than 200 clinicians and researchers delivering research-led improvements in patient care. He has developed cadaveric courses in Transoral Laser Microsurgery and Head and Neck surgery resulting in more than 100 UK and international surgeons being trained in the technique, raising the standard of transoral surgery for UK head and neck cancer patients.
Professor Jones said: “I am genuinely touched and honoured by this prestigious award, which I am delighted to accept on behalf of Liverpool Head and Neck Centre. Surgical education has been integral to my clinical academic role, a view shared by my academic and clinical colleagues in LHNC. Very few things are more important than developing, nurturing and empowering clinical and clinical academic doctors in training, which is why we have developed a suite of hands-on surgical instruction courses and other educational resources, to train the surgeons of the future.”
Mr Jason Fleming, Clinical Lead for ISMIB commented: "We are delighted that Professor Jones has received this prestigious and well-deserved accolade in recognition of his longstanding dedication to teaching. He has had a profound and positive influence on the training and careers of countless surgeons and clinical academics across the UK. He continues to lead research and innovation across the region and to encourage the next generation of leaders in our specialty. Many congratulations from all the ISMIB staff and students."
