Celebrating Earth Day 2022: Invest in our planet

The University’s strategic commitment to sustainability states three broad aims for the institution – to achieve net zero carbon by 2035, reduce our waste by 50% by 2025 and for every student to undertake a sustainability-related module, extra-curricular activity, or learning as part of their programme. Achieving these aims and furthering our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development goals (UN SDGs) is about collaboration, engagement, and inspiring action.

What is Earth Day?

Since 1970, on 22 April, millions of people around the world have marked Earth Day to demonstrate support for environmental protection, highlighting the urgent action we need to take to save our planet. The theme for Earth Day 2022 is “Invest in Our Planet” and is focused on accelerating solutions to combat our greatest threat, climate change, and to activate everyone – governments, citizens, and businesses – to do their part. Everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable. The University is aiming to be a leader in sustainability and recognises its responsibility to help accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future for all.

Invest in our planet. What do we do?

The University is actively taking steps to look at its impact on climate change and wider sustainable development. We have signed an accord committing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and have developed a new Sustainability strategy, building on existing activities, research and education strengths in this area. The University has also established a cross-institutional research theme Climate futures, aligning its academic strengths to best meet environmental challenges, including developing solutions and identifying gaps where there is a need to generate new knowledge.

Planet earth from space

At the University we are passionate about protecting our planet and have made a commitment to being net zero carbon by 2035. Our researchers are informing policy and creating new technologies. And you can be part of the solution by studying one of our climate related programmes.

Invest in our planet. What will you do?

There are so many actions, big and small, you can take to make a better world for everyone. There is a huge variety of projects and activities that staff and students can get involved in which shape sustainability across the University and beyond, such as campaigns and events, content creation, volunteering roles and development opportunities.

We are always looking for contributions for inclusion in the University’s Sustainability newsletter, so whether you’re a member of staff or a student who is interested or involved in the university’s or the aims of the UN SDG’s through research, teaching, volunteering, community engagement and other activities, we want you to share your ideas and experiences.
