About

Personal Statement

Maria joined the Institute for Population Health as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in May 2023. She is involved in a NIHR-funded project exploring the mental health effects of the introduction of Universal Credit using Difference-in-Differences (DiD) analyses.

Maria recently obtained her PhD at the University of Sheffield with no corrections. In her PhD thesis, she used advanced panel data methods, utilising data from the British Household Panel Survey, the German Socio-Economic Panel and the European Working Conditions Surveys, to examine the mental health impact of working hours mismatches among dual-earner couples through a comparative-historical analysis of the British and German welfare states.

Prior to coming to the UK to pursue her doctoral studies, Maria lived, worked and studied in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Greece. Her studies have been funded by a number of international, merit-based scholarships, including the doctoral fellowship at the Centre for Decent Work (CDW), University of Sheffield, the NN Future Matters Scholarship and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Fellowship Programme for excellent students (VUPF).
