About

Maria joined the Institute of Population Health as a postdoctoral research associate in May 2023 to work on a NIHR-funded project investigating the mental health effects of Universal Credit using difference-in-differences analysis.

In June 2025, she transitioned to the Coastal Communities and Creative Health project, a national partnership to tackle health inequalities in coastal communities.

She completed her PhD at the University of Sheffield with no corrections, using panel data from the UK and Germany to examine the mental health impacts of under- and overemployment among dual-earner couples through a comparative welfare state lens.

Before her PhD, Maria lived, worked, and studied in Greece, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, supported by several competitive international scholarships, including those from the Centre for Decent Work (University of Sheffield), Nationale-Nederlanden (NN Future Matters Scholarship), and the Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam (Fellowship Programme for excellent students).
