About

I am based within the Liverpool Reviews and Implementation Group (LRiG). The Group delivers a range of high-quality NIHR Health Technology Assessments and capacity development initiatives and has been at the core of evidence-based guidance development at NICE for over 20 years.

I am responsible for critically appraising clinical and cost-effectiveness evidence for health technologies submitted to NICE as part of its Health Technology Appraisal programme. Working within multidisciplinary teams, I lead clinical effectiveness evidence assessments, manage project delivery and develop technical reports of our evidence assessment to extracting standards and timescale.

My experience includes applied research, capacity development and teaching and learning related to evidence synthesis, with a reach across Institute, University and national collaborations across health, social care and education sectors.

Prior to returning to the University of Liverpool, I was responsible for technical and management roles within 3 NICE guidance-producing centres and the Cochrane Collaboration. I have led all stages of evidence synthesis for Health Technology Assessment and contributed to over 70 NICE guidance projects on new drugs and medical devices (technology appraisals), clinical practice and public health.

I continue with a focused portfolio of independent applied research and education, working closely with Liverpool EvideNce Synthesis (LENS).

Supervision
I am available to support supervision of PhD projects in evidence synthesis methodology (including systematic reviews of quantitative and/or qualitative evidence or service delivery; research topic prioritisation; core outcome set development and bibliometrics) and guideline development methodology. In addition, I welcome opportunities to supervise PhD or professional doctorate projects using evidence synthesis as part of a larger programme of research. My interests also include educational research and medical professionalism development.

Prospective PhD candidates should have secured funding or be prepared to ‘self-fund’. I have experience of off-site supervision of PhD and professional doctorate candidates (DClinPsych, DClinSci, DDSci).
