Get a HEADSTART – Liverpool School of Engineering investing in students & developing new engineering talent

Over 40 high achieving Year 12 pupils from schools across the UK took part in the annual HEADSTART Aeronautical Engineering summer school held at the University of Liverpool’s School of Engineering.  HEADSTART is designed to inspire and encourage students interested in mathematics and science to apply for Engineering degree courses at university, as well as giving them the opportunity to experience a taste of University life and increase their awareness of career paths and prospects for graduates.  Liverpool’s School of Engineering summer school is the only University in the UK offering HEADSTART Year 12 students an opportunity to experience Aeronautics & Aerospace Engineering and is one of the most popular, dynamic and successful summer schools.

Led by the Liverpool Flight Science & Technology Research Group it gives students a great experience of working in teams to solve aerospace & engineering challenges including a glider competition and programming and flying the flight simulator with test pilots.  Dr Mark White, who organises Liverpool HEADSTART, said; “HEADSTART is a fantastic opportunity for students to meet our engineering undergraduates, find out more about our Aerospace and Engineering degrees and what University life is like in Liverpool.  It shows the positive impact this event has, as we are delighted that several of our graduates (who chose to study Engineering at the University of Liverpool after their HEADSTART experience) are still involved and take time off work to participate now as mentors.” ‌

HEADSTART students thoroughly enjoy their experience and time at Liverpool’s School of Engineering.

In addition, the School of Engineering also hosts a follow on Dragonfly day, an extra day after HEADSTART for younger girls who are interested in STEM subjects, led by girls who attended HEADSTART.  Over 30 Year 9 girls from local Merseyside Schools attended Dragonfly and had a fun packed day learning about and experiencing engineering.
