002 Winners of IMechE Challenge

A team of first year students from the University of Liverpool’s School of Engineering achieved a fantastic triple win at this year’s North West IMechE Undergraduate Design Challenge.

The team of five beat off competition from other North West of England Universities to come; 1st in the presentation judging; 1st in the peer review poster judging and joint 3rd in the ‘design-make-test’ dynamic competition.

The annual design challenge is organised by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, (IMechE) and is held specifically for first year university students. It challenges them to ‘Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate’ a small vehicle or contraption, to fulfil a task.

This year’s challenge was to design a small water craft with ‘the greatest sustainable thrust’ for entry into a tug-of-war competition. Liverpool’s team Tim Jones, Aqeel Shamsul, Tess Skyrme, Robert Smith and Andrew Wallace achieved a University first with their great results and as winners they were awarded a total sum of £300 in prizes from the IMechE.

Timothy Jones, student team leader said “The IMechE competition was a real challenge but great fun to take part in and we are delighted to have received awards in so many categories.”

Dan Hibbert, Programme Director and tutor for CDIO said ‘We are extremely proud of the team’s success and this is the best achievement for the school so far in this annual challenge.  Winning in these categories highlights the variety of areas the first years are taught, how to implement the theory and how well they worked together as a team.”
