Overview
Using material culture and texts, this course will examine the lives of the workforce of ancient Egypt. Bureaucracy and the priesthood were the first professions. Linked to the latter were physicians, who used both practical and spiritual means to heal the sick. From the New Kingdom the military provided a vehicle for career advancement. This course will develop participants' knowledge of the skills, training, working conditions and career prospects of the ancient Egyptians. We will consider who held these roles and how they acquired these positions. A visit to the Garstang Museum is included where students will be able to handle objects from ancient Egypt related to the professions. No prior knowledge is required just an inquisitive mind.

Course lecturer
Dr Joanne Backhouse completed her PhD at the University of Liverpool in 2016. Her research focuses on the representation of women in ancient Egypt. However, she has a wider interest in the art of ancient Egypt and the evolution of style. She has lectured on the material culture of ancient Egypt for over ten years, in a variety of institutions and more recently online. She is also Chair of Wirral Ancient Egypt Society.
